FIXING THE ECONOMY WITH GREEN

October 11th, 2010

I’m not talking about money here however the United States needs some serious investment in our future.  For a leap forward in our civilization, it is in my opinion that free energy would be the end all be all fix for the next 100 years. Consider the Industrial revolution and the advancement of technology.  Almost every aspect of life was improved.  Free energy will have profound Economic, National Security, and Environmental Benefits. The concepts here are simple and clear, however,  the implementation of these concepts are not.

The First Benefit of free energy is clearly economic.  Consider the billions of dollars spent each year by individuals and institutions but more importantly the cost to the United States as a whole.  In 1980 the United States used 78.1 Quadrillion Btu’s of energy; in 2009 95.4 (12% increase) Quadrillion Btu’s; and the projected use in 2035 is 114.3 Quadrillion Btu’s (68.3% increase from 1980).  See figure 1Statistics graph

Energy consumption is dramatically rising and free energy will have exponential economic benefits immediately and long-term.

Secondly, Free Energy will have strategic advantages in two ways economically and defensively.  Economically speaking free energy will provide a much stronger and independent economy, forcing other regions such as the Middle East to loose their main source of GDP, Oil.  Defensively speaking, If free energy is to exist, solar panels would have to be placed all over the country, thus decentralizing the power supply.  Power plants have always been a potential target for terrorism and the loss of a power plant could have devastating effects.  Solar panels however would be an impossible target if placed on the rooftop of houses or in numerous small areas where the loss of one area wouldn’t have a large effect on energy production. This strategy would effectively neutralize a national defensive issue.

Third, free energy means great things for the environment.  Free energy would require an investment in Solar Energy. Solar energy produces no carbon emissions and if wide spread will eventually shut down other forms of electrical production such as coal plants.  Coal currently is the number one source of electricity in the country.

I have managed to create a solar panel system that will pay for itself in 15 years and last 25 to 30 years. That’s at least 10 years of free energy per system.  With increases in technology I hope to be able to create or find a solar panel system that will last 40 to 50 years and still pay for itself within 15 years.  It’s only a matter of time before the technology to do so is here.  Another major difficulty to a free energy United States is the implementation. Implementation would take years and excellent management.

GREEN POLITICS

Obama’s Health Care Push

Sept. 9 2009

Obama was greeted warmly from the divided senate as he walked to his podium with confidence and smiles for members he shook hands with and also for the American people.  This was his last and best chance to save the health care system.

Obama Praised that “we have pulled this economy back from the brink” of collapse but Americans are still not out of the water.  “We come here to build a future” stated Obama, “I am not the first president to take up this cause but I am determined to be the last”

Obama wanted congress to know that too many times has insurance “pulled the plug” on Americans when they need health insurance the most.  The system is getting worse and more expensive which will increase the national debt.  “Our health care problem is our deficient problem”

Obama’s Goals for health care reform

  • Increase security and stability for those who have insurance
  • Provide insurance for those who do not
  • Stop the growing cost of health care

Obama’s Details on his Health Care Plan

  • No changes will occur to individuals who already have health care
  • Make it illegal for insurance companies to deny  health care for individuals with pre existing conditions
  • Make is illegal for insurance companies to stop providing coverage during an illness
  • No cap on coverage an individual can receive in a year or even in a life time
  •  Limit on out of the pocket expenses.

There are no doubt politicians and the press expected certain statements in Obama’s health care speech.  They expected the details to Obama’s health care plan and for him to debunk rumors that have circulated.  Some also expected from Obama to raise names from both democrats and republicans to add weight to his arguments.

He clearly stated that the bogus rumors of death panels would be laughable if they weren’t so cynical… and irresponsible.  Obama had distaste for how some politicians, mainly republicans, were conducting their debates and themselves, for which Obama believes to be destructive.

Another claim by Obama that his plan would not insure illegal immigrants was laughed at by a heckler from the republican side.

Obama also used his words to debunk that this plan would raise the national debt and proclaimed that the plan would not ad one penny to the deficit.

WHERE ARE THE GOVERNMENT RENEWABLE ENERGY FUNDS?

July 8th 2009

The U.S. Stimulus package passed in early 2009 promised to strengthen the renewable-energy industry with new investment and government lead programs, but the promise of capital to the industry is holding up private-sector investments

Uncertainty about upcoming programs and their rules has made investors weary that they may also get government money.  For companies that need the money, government capital is the cheapest route.  From the view of startup companies its worth not accepting private capital at this time because of the possibility of getting it cheaply from the government.

Incentives have not been defined with rules though both the U.S. Treasury and the U.S. Department of Energy have promised to issue rules and open the applications process as soon as late July 2009

OVERVIEW OF G8 SUMMIT Focusing on Economy and

CLEAN TECH JOBS

May 10, 2009

On April 17th, “going green” also means becoming health. Since the Federal Government has declared that emissions pose a danger to public health, environmental policies and emission standards will become an unquestionable need and not just a debate to support public health.
It is clear that the bush administration’s policies are receding. Concerns for global warming were previously ignored and regarded as an economic decision and not a health or environmental need.
The Obama administration is leading future regulations well by providing a clear example of their beliefs. The automobiles used will be standardized to reduce carbon dioxide admissions but cars are not the only intended change. Scientists also claim that emissions from power plants are a large contributor of global climate change.
Legislation will be debated on how to carry out this new declaration of public health risks and the white house will be a strong advocate for speedy change.
On April 21st the Environmental Protection Agency supported a new bill with a far reach for change. A summary Analysis of climate change became available titled “EPA Analysis of the Waxman-Markey Discussion Draft: The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009”
With all the changes proposed new jobs will certainly follow in supporting renewable energy jobs and environmental jobs.

GREEN POLITICS TODAY

I beg the question whether or not green politics is a going concern or if green politics is just segments of overall general politics. If we narrow our scope to the united states Green political issues (and not the green party issues) are growing but not seen in national politics everyday. Every week we will hear about major green political issues but not every day. If we broaden our political scope globally green politics is seen everyday however insignificant the country the news originates from. If you are new to this blog i recommend you view previous posts such as "Biden's Definition of a green job"

GREEN POLITICS- ECONOMIC POLICY MAKERS

Christina Romer- Career information

In 2008 Christina Romer was set to join the Harvard University faculty of economics, and her husband was offered a similar position at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. They both ended up staying at Berkeley after Drew Faust, president of Harvard, vetoed Christina's appointment. This decision was largely debated in the academic community. The motivations for Faust's decision to block Romer's appointment remain unclear, though speculation has focused on an opposition among "New Classical" economists to her "New Keynesian" tendencies.

Here is a link of Christina Romer discussing her current views of the US economy.

To sum up she mentioned that it was alarming to find that the average work week as been reduced to 32 hours. Also, job growth will not happen until after 2009.
