Description

The NorthWoods Conservation Corps is now accepting crew leader and assistant crew leader applications for its 2009 summer youth crews. The Corps is a conservation-based education and employment program for young people ages 14 and up. NorthWoods? Crew Leaders and Assistant Crew Leaders are highly trained, enthusiastic and motivated individuals who coordinate their specific crew for the duration of the summer work season. Leaders train and supervise crewmembers in the completion of high quality conservation projects and facilitate group educational activities. Duties include: completing work projects; maintaining tools and equipment; compiling work logs, crewmember evaluations and other required documentation; and ensuring that crewmembers adhere to NorthWoods policies and expectations. Crew Leaders train and supervise crews of between four and eight crewmembers in the completion of a variety of conservation projects including trail building and maintenance, riverbank restoration, wildlife management and parks management. Assistant Crew Leaders coordinate crew activities in cooperation with the Crew Leaders. Assistants may be responsible for leading small groups in the completion of work projects, facilitating educational activities, and completing crewmember evaluations and work logs. Crew Leaders and Assistant Crew Leaders are supervised by Ross Stevens, NorthWoods Conservation Corps Director. Applications are due on April 17th. For more information call (802) 723-6551 ext. 117, or email corps@northwoodscenter.org Duties specific to three types of crews: Kingdom Corps Community Day Crews (Lyndon and NorthWoods Crews) ? Community Day Crew Leaders supervise eight crewmembers (14-18) work Monday- Friday 8am-4pm with weekends and evenings off. Crew Leaders transport crews to work sites, ensure proper tool use and safety, document crewmember work project progress, and facilitate daily ?crew time? activities. Dates: Mandatory paid training June 22- 26. Season ends August 8. Kingdom Corps Backcountry Crew ? Backcountry Crew Leaders supervise eight crewmembers (16-20) in the completion of high priority and remote trail maintenance projects, living and working outdoors Monday- Friday while living in a remote ?spike camp? with weekends off. In addition to daily work, Crew Leaders are responsible for establishing a crew ?spike camp?, planning meals, coordinating camp chores and planning educational and evening activities. Dates: Mandatory paid training June 22- 26. Season ends August 8. Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Wildlife Refuge Crew ? YCC Crew Leaders supervise four crewmembers (15-18) working in one of several refuges in the US Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge System Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm. Work projects and activities may include buildings and grounds maintenance, recreational facilities development, wildlife monitoring activities, invasive species control, and participation in several overnight visits to various regional refuges. Positions available at Silvio O. Conte National Fish & Wildlife Refuge -Nulhegan Basin Division (Brunswick, VT), Pondicherry Division (Whitefield, NH), Great Falls Discovery Center (Turners Falls, MA), Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge (Errol, NH) and Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge (Westbrook, CT). Dates: Mandatory paid training June 22- 26. Season Ends August 8 (Umbagog crew season ends August 13). Possible extended work season available before and after summer field season. SOLO Wilderness First Aid Certification is required. Training is offered at NorthWoods Stewardship Center on June19-20.


Requirements

Crew Leader Qualifications: 20+ years of age with a valid Driver?s License. Experience in conservation work or field-studies is required. Leaders must be physically fit and able to work in a challenging outdoor environment. Experience with youth recommended. Compensation: $400-450 for 40-hour week during the summer work season. Paid training provided. Deferred student loans and AmeriCorps Education Award may also be available (depending on eligibility). Employment dates: Mid-June through Mid-August. Assistant Crew Leader Qualifications: 18+ years of age with a valid Driver?s License. Experience in conservation work or field-studies is recommended. Leaders must be physically fit and able to work in a challenging outdoor environment. Experience with youth recommended. Compensation: $360-$400 for 40-hour week during summer work season.
